The season opener at PKVR saw DLSW Wasps clinch a thrilling 7-run victory over CCC Sunrisers in a match that showcased resilience, teamwork, and high-pressure performances.
After being invited to bat first, the Wasps got off to a steady start with openers Shanzeen Shahzad and Maryam Bibi putting on 22 runs in the first four overs. The momentum was briefly disrupted in the fourth over when Kary Chan dismissed Maryam Bibi and Pushti Lakhani was run out in quick succession. Despite the setbacks, Shahzad anchored the innings confidently, guiding the team to 44/2 at the end of the powerplay.
Shahzad then found a reliable partner in Iqra Sahar, and together they built the largest partnership of the match—37 runs—which placed the Wasps in a commanding position at 71/2 by the halfway mark. However, the dismissals of Iqra (17) and Shanzeen (37) in consecutive overs stalled their momentum. Jaswinder Kaur contributed a valuable 11 runs, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to build on the foundation. Nevertheless, the Wasps managed to bat through the full 20 overs, finishing at 101 all out, with the final wicket falling on the last ball of the innings.
For the Sunrisers, Kary Chan, Hoi Lam Poon, and Hoi Ching Poon were the standout bowlers, each claiming two wickets and keeping the Wasps’ total within reach.
In defense of a modest target, the Wasps needed a disciplined bowling effort. Iqra Sahar delivered early impact, bowling Kary Chan in the third over to leave the Sunrisers at 15/1. The Sunrisers regrouped to reach 33/1 by the end of the powerplay, but the seventh over from Rajvir Kaur turned the tide, producing two run-outs and triggering a mini-collapse.
Despite the setbacks, the Sunrisers continued to accumulate runs steadily, reaching 78/4 after 12 overs. Alina Sattar’s introduction in the 13th over proved decisive, as she trapped Hoi Lam Poon LBW with a well-directed delivery. With the experienced Pui To still at the crease, the Sunrisers remained in contention. However, her run-out for 28 in the 14th over opened the door for the Wasps to target the tail.
Jaswinder Kaur bowled a tight 15th over, conceding just one run and picking up a crucial wicket to leave the Sunrisers at 89/7. Maryam Bibi then delivered a game-changing final over of her spell, dismissing Megan Leung and Hoi Ching Poon for ducks, reducing the Sunrisers to 91/9.
The final blow came in the 17th over with another run-out, as the Sunrisers were bowled out for 94, falling just short of the target. The Wasps’ victory was a testament to collective effort, with contributions across the board in both batting and fielding. It was a spirited start to the season, marked by grit, composure, and a well-earned win.
